The intake of nutrients that we have does not always compare to the right amount of nutrients our body desires to remain healthy. Most people will have very high intakes of fats, sugars, salt, and calories while not taking in enough minerals and vitamins our body needs. By eating a healthy diet and staying on it, you can help save yourself a lot of trouble from heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure.
When thinking about how to eat well, there are three basic ideas to keep in mind: balance, variety, and moderation. Balance means choosing foods from all of the food groups. Variety means choosing different types of foods within each food group. Moderation means controlling portion sizes of the foods we eat.
A balanced intake includes items from all of the food groups. Each food group provides our bodies with different nutrients
Variety and balance are very closely related when it is concerning a healthy diet. Balance will tell you to eat foods from all of the food groups and variety will say that you need to pick out different foods within each food group.
There is not one specific food that will provide you with everything the body needs and help keep you safe from diseases that are related to nutrient issues. If you have a variety of foods in your diet, then you are helping to ensure you have all the necessary nutrients. By eating only broccoli everyday, you will receive the amount of foliate the body needs, but you are not going to get the essential vitamin A intake that comes from carrots and other vegetables.
Variety in your diet also keeps things interesting. If you eat the same meals every day you will eventually become bored and may stray from your healthy eating pattern. Try new fruits and vegetables depending on what is in season, make a healthy recipe using new foods, or jazz up an old favorite by adding new foods to an existing dish.
Another fantastic reason to include a variety of foods in your diet is a substance called phytochemicals. This substance resides in many fruits, whole grains, and vegetables. Many modern day studies have shown that a large intake of that substance can help reduce the possibility of you contracting cancer or heart disease. You cannot receive phytochemicals from any vitamin or mineral supplements since they are only found in certain foods.
Because there are actually no bad or good foods out there, moderation will be the determining factor as to what is good or bad. Surely, you have already begun to see the importance of implementing all of the food groups in your diet for the different essential nutrients. Therefore, if you keep you away from the foods that you really like there is a good chance you will eat a lot more than you should. The main thing you should concentrate on is moderating your intake rather than taking out certain foods you like.
Moderation also means watching portion size. Remember that a serving of meat should be 3 ounces which is about the size of a deck of cards, a serving of regular mayonnaise is 1 teaspoon, and a serving of milk is 8 ounces or 1 cup. One of the most common mistakes people make when trying to eat properly is overestimating portion sizes. It is also important to watch portion sizes in restaurants as most dishes can serve two to three people.
Maintaining a healthy and balanced diet does not have to be hard. Try keeping a food journal and always eat in moderation. In no time at all you can be on a long lasting healthy diet!
