Acai Colon Cleanse And Low Testosterone In Men
If you think you are suffering from low testosterone production, please read my story. I wrote this article to share my experience. My hope is that this article will be helpful to other men who might be going through the same thing I was. Please note that I am not a physician or an authority on health issues.
I am 42 and about eight years ago I started noticing that my early morning erections stopped happening! Something was definitely wrong but I wasn’t sure what. I had no energy to do anything and I would get dizzy if I bent over to tie my shoes! I was also gaining weight without any changes to my diet.
I went to the doctor and was referred to an Endocrinologist. He did a bunch of testing and told me that my testosterone production was very low. I was diagnosed with pituitary hypogonadism which basically means that my body stopped sending signals to my testicles to produce testosterone. He told me that it was somewhat common in men my age. The treatment was for me to give myself an injection of testosterone once every two weeks.
After my first shot, I felt much better. My energy came back, I started losing weight, my erections and libido returned in earnest. That was it! That was the answer. It just made so much sense. I was low on testosterone, so I needed to supplement testosterone right? Wrong! Let me explain further.
The testosterone therapy was working out great. I felt much better with “normal” levels of testosterone in my body. The problem was that eventually, the testosterone started to cause my body to produce too many red blood cells (a condition called ploycythemia vera).
The downside of an increased number of red blood cells – thicker blood means my heart has to work harder to pump blood throughout my body. That “extra work” I’m asking my heart to do could lead to a heart attack. Also, thicker blood will clot easier and more effectively. This could lead to stroke, a pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, etc. Basically, it’s not good.
I had to be treated for this condition by a Hematologist. I had to go in a few times a month to take off a pint of blood. The theory was that by removing the thick blood, my body wouldn’t be able to re-produce the red blood cells fast enough and my blood would thin out. I needed to continue to do this until the red blood cell count (hematocrit) was at a normal level.
The testosterone that I needed to feel good was necessary but it meant that I needed to give blood several times a month to keep my red blood cell levels safe. It was horrible.
My wife and I saw an infomercial about Acai Colon Cleanse. She wanted to lose some weight (and I had a few pounds I could stand to lose as well). We did one of those free one-month trials that we found online.
I started taking the pills and noticed that my morning “duty” was a lot easier than before. I also wasn’t as hungry as usual but that’s pretty much all I noticed while on the pills. My wife actually did lose some weight (about 8 pounds).
Every time I went to the blood doctor, my Hematocrit level was way too high and I had to give blood to drop it to acceptable levels. I went to the blood doctor again (this was after I had been on the Acai pills for about a month) and this time, the test showed a LOW level of red blood cells. My doctor asked me if I had changed anything. He thought maybe I stopped taking my testosterone shots or something. I told him no. I was still on the testosterone. In fact, I had just recently done my shot about 3-4 days prior to that appointment.
After the appointment I realized that I had been on the Acai for the past month or so. I thought that it must have been the Acai that was changing my blood profile. I have no way to prove my theory but I still take Acai to this day and my blood profile remains normal. My wife actually stopped taking the Acai because she said she thought it was giving her head aches.
About 3 weeks later I had another appointment with my Endocrinologist. I was seeing him regularly as well (about once every 6-8 weeks). He would always order a blood test to check my levels of total and free testosterone. On this occasion, neither he nor I was prepared for the results of this test. My levels of testosterone were through the roof! My total testosterone measurement was 937 ng/dl! That’s about twice the normal level for a 25 year old man (I was 39 at the time).
Every time I would have my testosterone levels checked, the reading would be different. There was a correlation between how high or low the level was and how long it had been since my last testosterone shot.
I told the doctor that I had been taking Acai and asked him if he thought it might be having an effect on my testosterone levels. He said “no.” I think he was angry because he accused me of taking more of the drug than he had prescribed. He gave me a lecture about the side effects of taking too much testosterone (a steroid). I insisted that I was not taking more than I was supposed to but I don’t think he believed me.
I wasn’t able to find anything online about Acai and testosterone levels in men. All of the websites that I found really focused on the weight loss aspects of Acai.
The next time I saw my Endocrinologist, he did a test and my level of testosterone should have been VERY low (in the 200′s). It was not! In fact, it was high-normal (517 ng/dl). My doctor has no explanation but refuses to acknowledge that the Acai has anything to do with it.
Since that appointment, I have had several more testosterone tests. My level stays at a normal or high-normal (430-520 ng/dl). My blood profile (the high red blood cells) has remained within the normal limits. I attribute this to the fact that I’m no longer supplementing with testosterone injections. I feel great, I have energy, my weight is down a few pounds and I still really enjoy it when I poop! I’m not necessarily saying that Acai is responsible for all this, but I’m not saying that it isn’t either!
I continue to see both doctors just in case. So far though, every blood test has been normal!
If you think you might have low testosterone, you should go see a doctor who specializes in hormone replacement therapy.
If you want to give Acai a try, you should only use a brand that is 100% pure (not mixed with other supplements).
